The Organics Products Regulation of Canada, now into full force.

On June 30 2009, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) published the Stream of Commerce and Enforcement Policy, which was allowing a two-year transitional period for compliance with this regulation. Considering that this policy has come to an end, strict enforcement is now being applied. So it is mandatory for all Canadian organic products (including those from Quebec) to comply with the certification requirements of the Canadian Organic Regulations when they are sold on the interprovincial market or in countries accepting products certified against the Canadian Organic  Standards following  an equivalency agreement or recognition decree.

Therefore, all products sold on these markets must be certified against the Canadian Organic Standards by an accredited certification body appearing on the list published by the CFIA.  The CAEQ has provided organizations carrying out organic certification in Quebec with specific instructions on how to apply control measures and grant or maintain certification in compliance with these standards.

Organic products originating from Quebec and sold only within this Province are not subject to the Canadian Regulations. They have to be certified by a CARTV’s accredited certification body against the organic specification manual approved by the CARTV.
